What I've been up to lately

I see that it's been almost two weeks since my last post, so here's what I've been up to.

The second weekend in June I went to the Procrastinator's Brawl and Grand Tournament of Archery, a local-ish camping event. I was supposed to have scheduled four hours of dance classes and a ball in the evening, but since nobody actually showed up for the classes, they didn't actually happen. We had two new people for the ball, and then we called it quits when the torchlight tourney started up nearby. I mostly spent the day hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] desfontaines and her sweetie Jody, [livejournal.com profile] saltatoria, and Andria, our adorable newbie. The evening hafla was fun, if a bit chilly, and we all froze our tushies off at night.

Last week I headed out to Kalamazoo to spend some time with Zaynab and help her get ready for Border War, another camping event. We baked and sewed and sewed and baked. We made a whole new outfit for her husband, Sir Logan, who was away at Lillies War and was heading straight for Border War with no time for laundry. We made a batch of brownies and a batch of chocolate chip cookies for the Scribal Tea, and we also made a batch of chocolate-toffee chip cookies, three different batches of sugar cookies (lemon suns, orange tulips, and blue raspberry dragonflies), and five dozen s'mores-on-a-stick, all for the bake sale fundraiser for the Queen's Tea at Pennsic. It was strange to be able to set cookies out to cool on the countertops instead of hiding them in the sewing room (because now there's no Murphy to steal them).

The event itself was rather eventful, sort of. The spare tent that was supposed to be available for me to stay in did not arrive due to someone else needing the cargo space. Fortunately, a kind lord shared a portion of his mundane tent with me. He had a neat three-domed setup, with side pods that could be zipped off from the main dome and had separate entrances. I got to be a pod person in the nylon ghetto! Satuday was bloody hot. I worked several hours at the bake sale (which was blessedly shady), but when it was time for me to do my shift as a retainer it was too damn hot for me and I felt like crap. Fortunately there were plenty of people to fill in for me. I spent some time sitting in an air-conditioned car, then I had two helpings of the flavored shaved ice from the bake sale (which was also a Turkish coffee house) and spent some time in the shade with the same folks I hung out with at Procrastinator's. I was still way too hot, and ended up making my first-ever ready-made garb purchase. I bought a bog dress. Not at all flattering, but soooooooo comfortable. I napped through court because it was out on the un-shaded fighting field and I just didn't want to be out there. After dinner their Majesties went to do some European dancing so I tagged along. Adele taught them La Caccia d'Amore, a super fun 16th century Italian dance/game. After a few more dances TRMs left, and the rest of the dancers called it a night. I went back to camp, then hung out at the hafla for a few more hours before crawling back into my pod for the night. Woke up way too early on Sunday morning, packed up, hit the road (stopping at a rest stop for a short nap) and was home by about 10:30am.

There was more to the weekend, but I've rambled enough for now.

I've mostly slept since then. And itched (more mosquitoes than usual).

Given my inability to deal with high temperatures, I may have to accept that I may never make it to Pennsic.
