5 Questions Meme

So [livejournal.com profile] pumaviking finally asked me the five questions I asked her to back when [livejournal.com profile] kenllama started this thing in our neck of the woods. If you want to answer questions from me, just say so in a comment.

1. what is your favorite thing to bake, and why?

Gingerbread, because you just dump all the ingredients in the bowl, mix, pour into a pan, and bake. It's nearly instant gratification, and people are so impressed and think it takes tons of work to make. And it tastes so darn good! I also love my mom's lemon bar recipe because it really tastes lemony, and chocolate-toffee-chip cookies because I just do. I tend to bake sweet things because I have a wicked sweet tooth. I'd bake more bread, but the tendinitis in my wrists makes kneading painful.

2. what was your greatest fear about studying overseas (either for germany or the dig in england)?

They were both so long ago it's a little hard to remember what I was afraid of before I went. I suppose in Germany it was the language thing; even though I speak really darn good German, I was always afraid that I sounded like a doofus, which made me nervous and forget stuff, which made me sound like a doofus, which made me more nervous, etc. In England it was doing well in field school and getting along with the other people on the program. We shared rooms, bathrooms, meals, work, and free time. I was afraid I'd start to feel too crowded by people, but that didn't actually happen. And for both trips, the flights were a source of anxiety. Not because I'm afraid of flying, but because I was afraid of being airsick (or of people around me getting sick). I have a huge vomit phobia, which almost everybody knows. (no jokes please, I'm totally serious!)

3. would you really dye your hair the color in your icon? :)

I did once. In high school I dyed it magenta for finals week my sophomore year. Then later I dyed it purple, and another time midnight blue, then I mixed the purple and midnight blue together. Those were for the plays I worked backstage on. I liked the contrast between my all-black backstage clothes, my paleness, and my wild funky hair color. I actually started a bit of a trend that lasted a little while after I graduated.

OK, I tried loading some pictures here, but I couldn't get it to work, so here's a link for your amusement:

4. what movie has the best medieval clothes?

My favorite is the BBC/A&E miniseries of Ivanhoe, because I just adore the women's dresses. I've made one variation of that style, and have plans and material to make another. Also, it proves my point that early period garb can be pretty, and that men in Norman tunics can be sexy (mmmmmmm...Ciaran Hinds in Templar garb...drooldrooldrool). I'm also terribly fond of Dangerous Beauty. Some of the courtesans' costumes are a bit questionable (open-fronted, removable skirts over men's-style pants? I don't think so), but the men's doublets are gorgeous, and the wives' dresses are lovely as well. These are just my opinions.

5. what question do you wish people would ask you?

Cake or death? Cake, of course! (really, I have no idea how to answer this one, so I'll take the silly way out!)
